// What we flag

The fees most practices don't know they're paying for nothing.

Medical waste invoices are deliberately complex. National haulers layer ancillary fees on top of your base service charge — and most practice managers don't have time to question them. Here's what we flag every time.

Fuel surcharge
7–15% of bill
Tied to "fuel index" that goes up but rarely comes down. Stericycle's standard fuel surcharge has been 7.9–14.5% in recent years. Real fuel cost on an average pickup route: about 2%.
Service cost recovery
6.8% flat
Stericycle's standard line item. The official explanation: "to cover variable operational costs." The actual function: a permanent margin booster that auto-renews.
Environmental fee
$5–25/pickup
Charged across most national haulers. Sometimes called "environmental compliance fee" or "regulatory cost recovery." Vague enough to defy challenge — that's the design.
Energy surcharge
2–8% of bill
Distinct from the fuel surcharge but functions identically. Some haulers charge both. There's no real "energy" cost on a regulated medical waste pickup route.
Manifest fee
$5–15/pickup
A charge for generating the document the law requires the hauler to give you. Like a restaurant charging for the receipt.
Annual rate hike
8–20%/year
Buried in fine print, often without notice. Stericycle paid $26.75M in 2022 to settle a whistleblower lawsuit specifically about undisclosed rate hikes on government contracts.

Common questions about the analyzer

Which invoices does the analyzer work for?

Any medical waste invoice. Stericycle, Daniels Health, MedPro Disposal, WM Healthcare Solutions (which acquired Stericycle in 2024), Sharps Compliance, PureWay, BioMedical Waste Solutions, and any regional or local operator. The junk fee patterns are consistent across the industry — once you know what to look for, every invoice tells the same story.

What if my invoice isn't clear or has multiple pages?

Upload whatever you have. The analyzer can handle multi-page PDFs and partial screenshots. If we can't read something, you'll have a chance to enter the line items manually before we run the analysis.

Is this really free?

Yes. Free for any medical practice. WasteWise is funded by operator subscriptions on the directory side — practices never pay anything to use the analyzer or the directory.

What happens to my invoice after I upload it?

Your invoice is processed in your browser session. We only store it if you ask us to use the data to get competing quotes from other operators. We never share your invoice with your current provider, and we never share your contact details with operators at the matching stage. Full details in our Privacy Policy.

What if the analyzer doesn't find any junk fees?

You're in good shape — your operator is one of the few that doesn't bury you in ancillary charges. If you want to verify your pricing is also fair vs. market, you can use our side-by-side pricing comparison as a sanity check.

Do you sell my information to operators?

No. When we match you with operators for quotes, we share only practice type, zip code, pickup frequency, and waste volume — never your name, address, or contact info until you choose an operator and want them to reach out.

Two minutes. Could save you thousands.

The average practice we analyze is overpaying by $1,800–4,200 per year. The analysis is free either way — you have nothing to lose by checking.
