How the calculator works

The estimate is based on real pricing data collected from regional and local medical waste operators across Florida, Texas, California, New York, Georgia, Utah, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arizona. Four inputs drive the result:

// Input 1

Practice type

Dental, medical, veterinary, surgical, etc. Each generates different waste volumes and types. Surgery centers and funeral homes pay more because of pathological and hazardous waste handling. Tattoo studios pay the least because volume is low.

// Input 2

Size

Solo vs mid-size vs large practice. Roughly scales with provider count — more providers means more sharps, more red-bag, more pickup volume.

// Input 3

Pickup frequency

Monthly is cheapest. Weekly costs about 35% more than bi-weekly for the same volume. Many practices pay for weekly when bi-weekly or monthly would do — overpaying for frequency they don't need.

// Input 4

Location type

Rural practices pay roughly 18% more than urban practices because the operator has to drive further per pickup. Urban practices on dense routes get the best pricing.

The "national operator" estimate applies a 1.7-2.4x multiplier on the regional baseline — reflecting both the higher base rates national operators charge AND the typical 30-50% in junk fees (fuel surcharges, environmental fees, energy recovery, service cost recovery) layered on top.

Frequently asked questions

How does this medical waste cost calculator work?

It uses real pricing data from regional and local operators across 10 states in the WasteWise directory. You enter your practice type, size, pickup frequency, and state — it returns a fair price range (what a regional operator would charge) and compares it to typical national operator pricing for the same service. The calculation is based on container size, pickup frequency, waste type, and geographic routing factors.

How accurate is the estimate?

The fair price range is accurate within roughly 15-20% for most practices in the 10 states we cover (FL, TX, CA, NY, GA, UT, AL, LA, MS, AZ). It's a planning estimate, not a binding quote. To get a real quote, use the WasteWise quote-matching service — actual operators will give you exact numbers based on your specific address, volume, and waste types.

What factors most affect medical waste disposal cost?

Volume (lbs/month) and pickup frequency (weekly vs monthly) are the biggest drivers. After that: waste type (pathological and hazardous cost more than red-bag), geography (rural areas pay more), and operator type (national operators charge 1.5-3x regional rates for the same service). Junk fees from national operators can add 30-50% on top of the base rate.

Why is national operator pricing so much higher in the calculator?

Because the data shows it consistently is. We've analyzed hundreds of invoices from Stericycle, WM Healthcare Solutions, Veolia, and similar nationals. The pattern is the same: a base rate that's 20-40% above regional pricing, plus 30-50% in junk fees (fuel surcharges, environmental fees, energy recovery, service cost recovery, regulatory compliance). For the same service, the national bill is typically 1.5-3x the regional bill.

Should I trust the 'savings' number?

Use it as a planning estimate. The 'fair price' range is what regional operators in your area actually charge. If you're currently paying more than the high end of that range, you're almost certainly overpaying. Get competing quotes to verify before assuming you'll save the exact dollar amount shown — actual savings depend on your specific contract terms, volume, and the operators available in your area.

Is the calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free, no signup, no email required, no sales call. Run it as many times as you want with different inputs to understand how each variable affects pricing.
